Considering a Home Extension

Are You Looking To Extend Your Home? Learn how far you can extend

Undergoing an extension on your property is one of the most exciting journeys you can embark on, but there’s much to know before fantasising about that extra space and letting your contractors run wild.

For example, did you know that exactly how much you can extend by isn’t actually up to you? Allow us to introduce you to something called the Neighbour Consultation Scheme, if you haven’t already met before…

What is the Neighbour Consultation Scheme?

Also known as the Larger Home Extension Scheme, the blueprint was originally supposed to last until May 2019 before it was made a permanent fixture. Now, in 2020, the scheme allows a greater than 3 metres up to 6 metres rear extension on an attached house, and a greater than 4 metres up to 8 metres rear extension on a detached.

Let us break that down for you…  Once upon time, detached houses were only granted 3m extensions, whereas now you can extend up to 6m. In a similar fashion, detached houses can now be extended up to 8m. Are you with us?

What you should know before starting the work

It’s crucial that you keep in mind that every property is different and that there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ process. So, before making any kind of move that would be a hassle to take back, first look into any additional criteria that you may need to meet, and ensure that you’ve submitted your application to Planning Control.

If ever you feel overwhelmed by the process, please keep Eazyplans in mind. We have extensive experience in assisting homeowners in obtaining any planning permission necessary.

So, when can we get this show on the road?

Before the work can begin, the Council must consult the adjoining premises (your neighbours), giving them 21 days to object, within reason, to the extension plans that you have.

While potential objections can stem from the likes of loss of natural light, fear of damage to their property, disruption from construction workers and problems with the design, not all causes for objection will stand up with the planning office. So, don’t get disheartened before we’ve even started!
